    Dr. Andrea Parker is a dedicated general surgeon and surgeon educator based in rural Kenya. As the Head of Medical Education at Tenwek Hospital since 2015, Dr. Parker has significantly contributed to the enhancement of medical education within the region. Starting in 2017, she has played a pivotal role on the Education Committee, overseeing the development of a comprehensive, standardized surgical curriculum for PGY1 and 2 surgical trainees of the College of Surgeons of East, Central, and Southern Africa (COSECSA). This curriculum is also accessible open-access on SURGhub, extending its reach and impact. Dr. Parker is an Associate Member of the Academy of Master Surgeon Educators and holds the position of Chair of the Content Committee for the UN Global Surgery Learning Hub (SURGhub), further emphasizing her commitment to surgical education on a global scale.

    Her academic journey began at Indiana University School of Medicine, followed by a residency in general surgery at Brown University. Currently, she serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at Brown University, where she continues to influence the next generation of surgeons through her teaching and mentorship. Dr. Parker's work, particularly in a challenging rural setting, underscores her dedication to improving surgical care and education in underserved areas.

    Dr. Andrew Sanchez is an exiting PGY-3 in internal medicine at Yale New Haven Hospital: he will soon be starting a career in academic hospital medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston. Meeting hospitalized patients and working with them to achieve diagnostic clarity is his primary clinical passion. His interest in diagnosing the undifferentiated patient is the driving force behind deep interest in learning and teaching diagnostic reasoning. On X/Twitter – which he considers the centerpiece of his teaching portfolio – he is known for creating and sharing schemas for both common and uncommon clinical dilemmas, which are frequently accompanied by “Tweetorial” commentary, as well as diagnostic case challenges. He is additionally a team member of the multi-platform group The Clinical Problem Solvers, and he is the deputy managing editor for Glass.Health's AI-powered differential diagnosis tool.

    Dr. Azza Aly serves as an Associate Professor of Medical-Surgical Nursing at the Faculty of Nursing, Damanhour University in Egypt. Currently, she is the head of the nursing program at Ibnsina National College in Saudi Arabia. Her research interests are centered around enhancing patient quality of care, upholding nursing ethics, advancing nursing education, and promoting patient safety. Dr. Aly's work contributes significantly to the field of nursing, aiming to improve both the education of nursing professionals and the care provided to patients.

  • Catherine McDermott

    Dr. Catherine McDermott (“Cat”) was born and raised in Illinois. She ventured out east to complete her medical training at Penn State College of Medicine and also earned her Master's degree in Education. She subsequently completed dual residency training in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Michigan where she also served as Chief Resident.

    Dr. McDermott is acutely aware of the emotional toll hospitalization can take on patients and their families. This understanding fuels her commitment to support them during these challenging periods, converting a potentially intimidating experience into a collaborative journey. Her philosophy centers around enabling patients and their families to become integral members of their care team while collaboratively formulating treatment plans that consider their unique health complexities and personal goals.

    In addition to her patient-centered work, Dr. McDermott holds a deep passion for medical education, cherishing the opportunity to mentor learners at every stage of their medical careers.

    Away from the hospital, Dr. McDermott is an ardent nature lover with a soft spot for animals of all kinds. She enjoys being active which pairs well with her love of cooking and trying new foods.

    Dr. Chase J. Webber grew up in Middle Tennessee and is a proud graduate of Brentwood High School. He moved to Boston, Massachusetts and completed his BA in English and German literature from Tufts University in 2009, where he was a Tisch College Public Service and Citizenship Scholar. He attended medical school at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, and then in 2014 returned to New England for his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Massachusetts. He joined the Vanderbilt faculty as Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine in 2017. As an academic hospitalist and Vanderbilt Master Clinical Teacher, Dr. Webber has a special interest in the education of residents and medical students. He serves as Co-Director of the "How Doctors Think" Clinical Reasoning course for VUSM medical students as well as a Small Group Facilitator. He received the Outstanding Preceptor—Inpatient Award in 2020 and the Hugh J. Morgan Teaching Award for Best Faculty Teacher (VA) from the Internal Medicine Housestaff in 2021. His research interests include clinical reasoning, microlearning, and narrative medicine, and he is a member of the Gold Humanism Honors Society.

    Dr. Claire Donohoe is a distinguished graduate of Trinity College Dublin (TCD) from the class of 2006 and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland. She specializes as a resectional oesophagogastric cancer and general surgeon at the Trinity St James Cancer Institute/St James’ Hospital in Dublin.

    Her research interests in education are focused on innovative methodologies within medical education. Specifically, Dr. Donohoe is passionate about the utilization of peer learning as a tool to enhance medical education. She also explores the integration of medical humanities into medical education frameworks and advocates for the use of narrative practice. Through her work, Dr. Donohoe aims to contribute to the advancement of medical education, ensuring that future generations of medical professionals are well-equipped with the knowledge, empathy, and skills necessary for their challenging roles.

    Dr. Cory Rohlfsen is a core faculty member of the Internal Medicine residency at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and the director of the nation's first interprofessional, competency-based health educator track. As an internist practicing a hybrid of hospital medicine and primary care, Dr. Rohlfsen is deeply familiar with the challenges, affordances, and untapped opportunities within the clinical learning environment. He possesses a strong passion for educational psychology, motivation, and the impact of competency-based medical education (CBME) on trainees. Dr. Rohlfsen is also intrigued by the potential of large language models (LLMs) and generative AI to revolutionize traditional approaches to diagnostic reasoning, evidence-based medicine, and competency-based assessments of learners. At his core, he is a clinician educator who values the unchanging sacredness of the educational alliance between a dedicated teacher and learner. Dr. Rohlfsen considers it a privilege to teach, mentor, and coach incredibly talented trainees across both undergraduate and graduate medical education spectrums.

    Dr. Groot is a public health physician, born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on the territory of Garden River and Batchewana First Nations. She completed medical school at McMaster University, residency in Public Health and Preventive Medicine at Queen’s University, and a Masters in Public Health at the University of Toronto. She now lives with her family in Sudbury, Ontario, where she serves as the medical director of Réseau ACCESS Network’s supervised consumption site and HIV clinic. She has previously worked as the associate medical officer of health for the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, the Regional Supervising Coroner for Northeastern Ontario, and the associate medical officer of health for Niagara Region. She is an associate professor and the program director of the Public Health and Preventive Medicine Residency Program at NOSM University. Her HPE interests include competency-based public health training and social accountability in medicine. Her clinical interests include harm reduction and communicable disease control with a focus on syndemics, especially in northern, rural, and remote communities.

    Dr. Nicholas Burns (“Nick”) is an assistant professor of maternal-fetal medicine in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Texas Southwestern. He is the co-host of “CREOGs Over Coffee,” an OB/GYN educational podcast geared towards residents and other professional learners, and a creator of the #OBGynInternChallenge, a text message-based residency preparatory course. His primary interests in medical education are in workplace-based learning and assessment through the lens of “microlearning” and “microassessment.” When not noodling on these topics, he’s hanging with his wife Jessica, newborn son Augustine, and their two dogs, Link and Greyson.

    Dr. Toufic Chaaban graduated from the Lebanese University School of Medicine in 2012. He then joined the American University of Beirut where he completed a residency in Internal Medicine (2012-2015) , followed by a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine (2015-2018). After his graduation, Dr Chaaban joined the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio, U.S.A., where he completed a two-year fellowship program in Neurocritical Care. Before joining the LAU Gilbert and Rose-Marie Chagoury School of Medicine and LAU Medical Center - Rizk Hospital, Dr. Chaaban worked with Doctors Without Borders as an intensivist in a hospital project concerned with COVID-19. Dr. Chaaban will be the first practicing neurointensivist in Lebanon. He maintains active membership in several professional societies and is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society. Moreover he has garnered a number of awards including recognition as “Intern of the Year”and “Fellow of the Year” at the American University of Beirut. He has authored many peer-reviewed publications appearing in international journals. In addition to having clinical expertise in pulmonary diseases, general critical care and neurocritical care, Dr. Chaaban has a special interest in the education of medical students, residents and fellows.
